Several years ago, I had my very first experience with VR by playing Elite Dangerous at work. I immediately fell in love with VR and Elite Dangerous, so I made it my mission to get a VR system. Fast forward to now, and I have a gaming rig powerful enough to run PC VR games plus Elite Dangerous.
I've actually had Elite Dangerous for a while now, and I've logged 54 hours in the game (according to Steam). Not an amount to brag about, but its worth noting to point out that I have enough time in the game to say "I've at least tried it". While I really enjoyed the initial few hours of the game, I've started to notice that it has become very repetitive. In a nutshell, you can do one of 3 main types of missions: Mine, transport, or bounty.
I really enjoy the bounty missions, and the transport missions are relatively relaxing (you can get intercepted by pirates though). But I found Elite Dangerous to be seriously lacking any form of plot. Sure, there are factions you can join and do more of their missions which give some kind of lore, but it seems very tacked on.
While Elite Dangerous is beautiful and from my experience - bug free, I find it way too shallow. When I get in the game, I'm looking for some kind of end goal. Why am I here? What am I supposed to do? The tutorial directs you to go and pick up missions from the ports; Yet they all feel like side quests, rather than a main story.
I ended up putting down Elite Dangerous for quite some time due to the lack of story; But recently I became re-interested in the idea of playing a Space Pilot Cowboy kind of game. I figured I would do a little research, see whats out there and maybe get into something new.
