This is a reminder to go and setup some form of automated backup solution. What would happen if your computer started having issues right now? Do you have a way to recover the files, and/or do you have the files saved on an external hard drive?
A little while ago I was caught in a situation where my computer would not boot up and I wasn’t home. I didn’t have any of my backups, I didn’t have any of my tools to fix my computer. Thankfully though, I was at my in-laws place where I had access to another computer and a thumb drive so I was able to recover my laptop by reinstalling linux. But what if all I had was my laptop? Then what?
I may have made another article about the 3-2-1 Rule for backups. If I’ve made an article and I find it, I’ll link it below. But in summary: you should have multiple backups where one is offsite. I go into the idea that my offsite backup will be a copy on an external hard drive that I’ll keep in my Go Bag – a backpack I have setup with stuff I may need in case I need to leave my home in a very short period if time. Usually people put in survival gear such as stuff to make shelters, fire-starting equipment, rations, etc… . But seeing as though I live in a very-urban area; a bunch of the camp-related stuff really doesn’t matter. Instead, my bag consists of stuff to let me get to somewhere safe such as a hotel to spend the night. It also will include this external hard drive that I plan on plugging into the home NAS periodically to be updated.
3, 2, 1 Backup Rule
3 copies of your data, stored on 2 devices, where 1 is off-site.
Anyways, TL;DR: go setup backups.
